Book Awards
I am delighted to see that other writers, authors, of children’s literature have another opportunity for accolades of their work. It encourages me to continue studying, and learning. There are so many really fine writers whose work deserves such honors.
This Booker Prize will start in 2027 for contemporary children’s literature for ages eight to twelve. So exciting! Can’t wait to read the nominees.
The other major writing awards for children include the Caldecott Medal, for picture books given by the American Library Association’s division of Library Services to Children from the previous year’s most distinguished picture book.
The John Newberry Medal is bestowed by the same organization for the most distinguished contribution to American Literature for children. Both are excellent symbols and signals that the book bearing them is one to read.
The American Library Association has a webpage listing awards given by other organizations, (Children’s Book Awards) www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/childrens-book-awards-other-organizations.
Most of us have heard of the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Pulitzer Prize, but do you know about the Hugo Award or the St Louis Literary Award? There are so many. They can be broken down by location, audience and genre.
When looking for something to read, checking out the awards for the genre in mind, it can be a place to start and discover a new author. Give a new to you author a try.
