Old Picture Books
A part of my research when I began working my first picture book was to look up the ones I remembered from my childhood. The three that stood out were hard to find. It has taken me years now, and I am still one book shy.
The first was a Helen and Alf Evers book, Crosspatch. The repetition apart of the story was so fun to read aloud. One of the key elements of a good picture book, that it is fun to read aloud. Word 12choice is key.
The second book that sought and found was Me Too! by Stella Williams Nathan and illustrated by Jessica Zemsky. This a little more advanced story structure and again has repetition.
The last book that I am still searching for a copy of is Pony by Erva Loomis Merow. This is a picture book with photos and sketches. This story’s visual images were so appealing as a child.
I think about these books, and the ones my children and grandchild have favored when putting one together myself.
