Scarry Reader

On one of my single digit birthdays an aunt gave me a Richard Scarry book. The book was a collection of his work. The story about Pierre Bear stands out having held my attention for over forty years.

Mr. Scarry’s illustrations has been known for their warmth. He was honored posthumously with the 2012 Lifetime Achievement by the Society of Illustrators. The authors for his books include Ole Risom, Walter Retan and his wife Patricia.

Scarry died in 1994 in Switzerland where he and his family had moved in the early 1970s. Further research attributes Patricia’s passing a year later in 1995.

My history of childhood books has influenced a great deal of my desire to write, and likely to try my hand at illustration. What we hold dear, we do try to emulate and carry with us.
