SCBWI

Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators

When I was writing my first self pub, I joined and learned a lot from this group. I let my membership lapse when I began working on something for an older audience. Visited their website today..

There are several respected societies for writers that supply information and support.  Romance writers have a legendary one that has guided many a writer beginning or seasoned.

Mentioning this because anyone who has an idea should pursue that. How long it takes you doesn’t matter. If you have an idea, you are also likely the best person to see it though. When I first started writing there was.good number of people who sought to have me become their ghost writer.

They had an idea but didn’t have the follow through to write it. I’m quite sure they were going to want to be included in any profit. Not knowing the ins and outs, or what needed to be done, I am not sure they realize how much work goes into the taking an idea to a book.

Most books have gone through more than a one or two drafts/revisions. This is before the copy and proof edit. A few weeks ago watching a publishers beginning writer webinar they said the shortest production schedule was a year and that was with a completed draft that would go through no less than three edits. Most they said would take between one and three years.
